5 Things for Wednesday
The effort to repeal and replace Obamacare is becoming increasingly difficult, and an event later today may add to that. President Trump will meet again with Senate Republicans to discuss health care. This comes after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s announcement late Monday night that they would be changing to a slow repeal of the ACA over 2 years, hoping to craft a replacement in this time. It will be interesting what the President says about this, he was always in favor of a quick repeal on the campaign trail.
Also Governor John Bel Edwards joined in on the health care discussion yesterday by joining with a coalition of governors who do not support a repeal without any replacement plan.
Yesterday it came to light that there was a second, previously undisclosed meeting between President Trump and Putin at the G20 summit earlier this month. The President spoke with Putin through Russia’s translator, with no other officials present. In response to details being made public, Mr. Trump took to twitter to say:
“Fake News story of secret dinner with Putin is "sick." All G 20 leaders, and spouses, were invited by the Chancellor of Germany. Press knew! The Fake News is becoming more and more dishonest! Even a dinner arranged for top 20 leaders in Germany is made to look sinister!”
There are some more details that came out yesterday concerning the officer-involved shooting in Minneapolis that left one woman dead. The officer who was driving told investigators that they were driving in an alley looking for a potential sex assault suspect after Justine Ruszczyk called 911. It was then that he says his partner, Officer Mohamed Noor, was startled by a loud sound causing him to shoot through his driver’s side window, hitting and killing Ruszczyk, who was approaching the window.
Later today more information is set to be released on the case, so be looking out for that.
The video of a Lafayette police officer violently taking down a suspect has gone viral, and is stirring some outrage. It is pretty much the wrestling-style takedown heard round the world, and has now led to the suspect involved getting an attorney and filing a complaint on the officer. The Lafayette Police are continuing to stand by the officer, claiming the actions were justified.
Jon Huntsman was selected by President Trump to be the U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, was previously ambassador to China for Obama. This position will undoubtedly hold a lot of weight, due to some of the issues with the Trump administration’s supposed ties to Russia.
